Woah! How does she do it! The secrets of celebrity post-pregnancy weight loss

September 2012

Getting rid of that baby bump is almost as hard as giving birth – well maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but it is hard as hell. J-Lo, Beyonce, and Victoria Beckham make it look like a walk in the park. It’s no big secret that they hire God-like personal trainers and follow the strictest diet regimes on earth (which is impossible for the mummies in the real world to keep up with). The secret is how you, mums in the real world, can incorporate some of the advice into everyday life.

Let’s take a look to how it’s done: so go forth and lose that baby bump!

Victoria Beckham:

Just eight weeks after giving birth to her daughter Harper Seven, the former Spice Girl was more than ready to show off her stunning new figure. So what’s Victoria’s secret? The fashionista ran SIX days a week and stuck to a very strict fitness routine under the guidance of celebrity personal trainer Tracy Anderson.

While most mummies in the real world cannot afford the magic of Anderson, Beckham has another piece of valuable advice that’s worth taking note of: she likes to ‘create an illusion’ by wearing streamline pieces that are flattering to the figure. The five foot four designer said: 'People think I’m a lot taller than I am – it’s not because of the shoes that I wear but because of the way I dress'.

Fellow Spice Girl Melanie Brown also has some realistic advice. After giving birth to her third daughter Madison, she lost 40lbs (nearly 3 stones) – by participating on Dancing with the Stars. Her advice on losing the post-baby bump: 'I don’t believe in diets. I believe in listening to your body. If you want a burger, have one, but balance it out the next day by eating salmon and vegetables'.

That doesn’t sound so bad!

Beyonce Knowles:

The former Destiny’s Child singer wowed us with her stunning new figure – just FIVE months after giving birth to her daughter Ivy Blue. Beyonce declared that she lost 60lbs (4 stones) – by doing 90 sessions a week and eating lettuce! Eating lettuce? Come on Beyonce, you must have better advice for the real world.

The 30-year-old stuck to a protein diet: eggs for breakfast, protein shake or sliced turkey with capers for lunch, and yellowtail sashimi with jalapeños and wasabi for dinner. You have to admit that this diet is pretty sparse – so is she allowed any treats? Of course she has her treats, admitting that she gets ‘chocolate wasted’ every now and then.

Despite her strict post-pregnancy exercise regime (not to mention her pretty boring diet plan), Beyonce also owes losing the bulk of her weight to breast feeding.

It’s good to see that Beyonce is just as real as the rest of us!

Jennifer Lopez:

Since giving birth to her twins, Max and Emme, J-Lo lost 40lbs (nearly three stones) by eating whatever she wants, thanks to the Dukan diet. The Latino superstar ate her way through 1400 calories a day found in fresh fruits and raw vegetables, with a bit of protein at dinner times, and drank as much water as she possibly could.

What’s so good about this French diet is that you can also pig out on chocolate and alcohol! Is that it? Sounds pretty easy! Oh no, J-Lo didn’t get those to-die-for curves by clocking up the calories: the singer and actress worked out for 45-75 minutes four times a week (there has to be a catch somewhere!), and stayed well clear of red meat to maintain that killer figure.

Mariah Carey:

Last year Mariah announced the delightful news that she was expecting twins, but as the months rolled by we watched as the diva ballooned beyond imagination – she definitely had a tough job on her hands! Within six months of giving birth to Moroccan and Monroe, Mariah has lost an incredible 70lbs (5 stones!)

Bet you're hanging off the edge of your seat for the secret? The singer followed a very strict Jenny Craig diet plan, sticking to calorie-controlled meals – mainly soups- – and doing gentle exercises including walking her dogs and working out in the ocean.

Carey is now the spokesperson for Jenny Craig. However she did reveal that the other 40lbs vanished due to water loss during a difficult pregnancy.

Kourtney Kardashian:

Kourtney Kardashian lost 45lbs (3 stones) after giving birth to son Mason Dash Disick back in 2009. This hot chick has some pretty smart advice for mummies to think about when shifting the post-baby bump. Her advice is: KNOW YOUR WEIGHT LOSS LIMIT! Kardashian said breast feeding helped her to shift the weight. 'I was burning an extra 600 calories a day and I got really skinny and I was like I don’t want to lose any more weight!'

Full of motherly wisdom, the 33-year-old drops another valuable advice: 'It’s all about being a healthy mum – not a certain weight. The focus should be on your baby. Your life changes drastically when you’re taking care of another human being'.

The reality TV star revealed that breast feeding made her constantly ravenous. Kourtney now swaps her huge and often unhealthy meals for smaller low calories ones. Having oatmeal, salmon with brown rice and steamed carrots, sushi and scrambled eggs with wheat lavash bread every two hours was the secret to Kourtney’s bikini figure.

Kourtney has another bundle of joy: she gave birth to Penelope Scotland in July and has gained 45lbs. Is she bothered about losing it? According to the latest issue of US magazine, losing the ‘excessive weight’ is not on top of the priority list.

So what’s the moral of the story? Eat well (it’s ok if you relapse, you’re only human) and a little gentle exercise wouldn’t go a miss. But most importantly, enjoy those special moments with your baby… they don’t stay small forever!
