The Tale of Two Pregnancies – Jessica Simpson’s sensible approach to nutrition
Let’s face it, prior to her first pregnancy, Jessica Simpson had a body that most women - and lots of men – would die for (remember the tiny hotpants and tummy-baring t-shirt in Dukes of Hazzard?!) But during her first pregnancy in 2011/12, the singer and actress featured regularly in gossip columns and newspapers, all drawing attention to the weight she had gained. And, in all honesty pregnant women everywhere rejoiced to see a celeb that gained more than a few pounds in pregnancy. Now expecting her second child, Jessica is determined to keep her weight gain to a minimum this time around.
Let’s take a look at Jessica’s very different approaches to her pregnancies and her post-birth weight loss.
Pregnancy One
Seemingly unfazed by her weight gain, Jessica proudly posed naked and looking fabulous on the cover of Elle magazine at around six months pregnant. She joked at the time about her pregnancy diet, saying she had enjoyed “cheesecake for breakfast” and “fried chicken” in place of lunch, as well as “taking a break from working out”. It seemed though, that her poor diet caught up with Jess during the last few months of her pregnancy, with the Daily Mail reporting that she gained a total of 60lb (the NHS suggests that pregnant women usually gain between 17.5lb to 30lb).
Post-Baby
After the birth of Maxwell Drew in May 2011, Jessica chose to lose her baby weight sensibly using the Weight Watchers programme, starting a fitness regime six weeks after birth and walking 14,000 steps a day, whilst pushing Maxwell in a pram or carrying her in a sling. Combined with everyone’s favourite post-birth diet tip, breastfeeding, this regime helped the former Daisy Duke lose 50lbs – eventually getting to within 10lbs of her target weight before falling pregnant again. Jessica admits to feeling pressure from the media, but confessed on the Katie Couric TV show: “'there is a lot of pressure to lose weight. But I want to be healthy for my daughter”.
Pregnancy Two
Jessica announced her second pregnancy on Christmas Day last year. She is expecting a baby boy due, according to Vanity Fair, at the beginning of August (although we think it might be sooner).
This time around, the tabloids are telling a totally different story. Pictures of Jessica looking healthy and fresh-faced leaving the gym are accompanied by reports that she is working out three times a week. And, compared to the images of her in her first pregnancy she is looking noticeably slimmer right now. She recently told People Magazine: “With my first pregnancy I really let go. I felt like I deserved to eat whatever I wanted. Now I’m working out three times a week and keeping my cravings under control. I’ve only gained half of what I did in my first pregnancy!”
According to PerezHilton.com, Jessica and her fiancé Eric Johnson have set their wedding date for a month after their baby boy is born. The thought of wearing a wedding dress, along with her reported $4 million Weight Watchers deal and running around after two babies is sure to inspire gorgeous Jess to get back to her svelte yet curvy shape in no time at all.
