The Future King is Here!
At last, the world’s most eagerly awaited baby has arrived! Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge was born to the Duke and Duchess last Monday, 22nd July, weighing 8lb 6oz. The touching first images of William and Kate holding their newborn son will remain with the nation for some time to come. The new parents appeared relaxed, happy and oh-so-proud, handling their newborn son with confidence and joking about his “good set of lungs” before leaving hospital on Tuesday.
After spending the last nine months under media scrutiny and with constant commentary on the size of her bump, her pregnancy weight gain and what she was and wasn’t eating, the Duchess looked happy and healthy during the Royal’s brief first public appearance as a family. Her hair was (as always) styled to perfection and her carefully applied make up defied the hours she had spent in labour just a day previously. The dress she chose for the occasion – a classy, tailored-made Jenny Packham polka dot design – emphasised her post-birth figure and made no attempt to conceal the ‘mummy tummy’ that so many celebrities go to great lengths to disguise. At this, mums everywhere rejoiced: at last a ‘celebrity’ mummy who makes us feel better about ourselves (although we must admit, we were slightly jealous of those fabulous legs!).
But it seems that giving birth to our future king doesn’t entitle the Duchess to a day off from being under pressure to lose her baby weight almost immediately. The cover of gossip magazine OK! promised an exclusive interview with Kate’s trainer and talked about the Duchess’ ‘post-baby weight loss regime’, less than 24 hours after she had given birth!
This six-page weight-loss special, along with a crass Tweet by OK! led to a backlash on social media sites, with celebrities and members of the public calling the magazine ‘vile’ and ‘disgusting’ and calling for readers to boycott the publication. According to Guardian, OK! Magazine has since apologised for the front cover, saying that it “would not dream” of being critical of Kate’s appearance.
The Daily Mail reports that Kate and Will enjoyed a takeaway pizza hours after baby George was born at St Mary’s Hospital in London, suggesting that the Duchess isn’t too worried about following OK! Magazine’s weight loss plan just yet.
We think Kate looks as amazing as ever and that she should be given time to get to know and bond with baby George without having to worry about losing weight or shaping up after birth. In any case, all new mums are advised to wait until after their six-week post-birth GP check before embarking upon any weight loss or exercise regime. It would be fantastic if more celeb mums would take a leaf out of Kate’s book and show off their natural post-pregnancy tummies, easing the pressure on us real-life mums to get back into our skinny jeans just hours after giving birth.
